La prospección o exploración geofísica comprende un conjunto de técnicas o metodologías de naturaleza física y matemática aplicadas a la exploración del subsuelo para la búsqueda y estudio de yacimientos de sustancias útiles (petróleo, aguas subterráneas, minerales, carbón,…) como también la orientación de excavaciones arqueológicas, detección de galerías subterráneas, etc., por medio de observaciones efectuadas en la superficie de la Tierra.
Para encontrar dichos objetos es necesario que estos presenten un contraste de sus propiedades físicas con el medio circundante. Por ejemplo, un cambio de densidad entre la roca y una cueva es fácilmente detectable a través de mediciones geofísicas.
Para cada estudio se debe determinar cuál es el método geofísico más apropiado, como también sus modalidades de aplicación. Esto dependerá de qué se busca, las características litológicas y geográficas de la zona de estudio, y su accesibilidad.
Prospection or geophysics exploration includes a group of techniques of physic and mathematic nature, applied to the exploration of the underground with the objective of finding and studying useful substance deposits (oil, underground water, minerals, coal, etc.), orientating archaeological excavations, detecting underground galleries and others, through observations realized on the ground’s surface.
To find these objectives it is necessary that they present a contrast in comparison with the surroundings in their physical properties. For example, a change in the density between a rock and a cave is easily detected through geophysical measurements.
For each type of study one must determine which is the most appropriate geophysical method, also the modalities of application. This will depend on what is the objective of the search, the lithological and geographical characteristics and the accessibility of the area of interest.
